Jay Akers

Jay Edward Akers, 68, of Milton, Ky., died Thursday, June 22, 2017, at
his residence.
He was born July 5, 1948, in Lexington,
Ky., to Aaron and Susan Akers. He earned his undergraduate degree in
history and his teaching certificate from Eastern Kentucky University. He also earned a master’s degree in psychology from Spaulding
University. He was a retired Sergeant First Class from the Army
Reserves, and trained troops during Desert Storm. He worked as a state
probation and parole officer for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing
and reading historic magazines. He also enjoyed farming, raising goats
and sheep, and playing golf.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years,
Sonia Kay McElroy of Milton, Ky.; two daughters, Jenifer Akers of
Louisville, Ky., and Erin Phipps of Louisville, Ky.; one sister, Sarah
Brady of Louisville, Ky.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by his parents and one brother, Larry Akers.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at
Ransdell Funeral Home in Bedford, Ky. Burial will be private.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the
service.
Expressions of sympathy may take the
form of donations to the Trimble County 4-H Agriculture Club.
